style=\"--awb-content-alignment:justify;\"><p>Monitoring the composition of the atmosphere is a key objective of the Copernicus programme. The <a href=\"https:\/\/atmosphere.copernicus.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service<\/a> (CAMS) combines satellite observations with numerical modelling by means of data assimilation and inversion techniques to turn the content of Earth-Observation data into information products that address some of today\u2019s major societal topics.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;\">CAMS2_35Bis: a highly technical operational project<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-builder-row-inner fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"width:102% !important;max-width:102% !important;margin-left: calc(-2% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-2% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column_inner fusion-builder-nested-column-2 fusion_builder_column_inner_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:0.98%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:0.98%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:0.98%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:0.98%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:0.98%;--awb-spacing-left-small:0.98%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\" style=\"--awb-content-alignment:justify;\"><p>CAMS provides both global atmospheric composition products, using the Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) of ECMWF, and regional European products, provided by an ensemble of nine regional models. <strong>HYGEOS co-leads with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knmi.nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KNMI<\/a> the CAMS2_35Bis project<\/strong> that requires experience and expertise in several domains: integrated global chemistry and aerosol modelling, physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, air quality modelling, as well as a detailed knowledge on the architecture and functioning of the IFS and of the possible observational datasets used for evaluation. CAMS2_35Bis acts as a continuation, until 31<sup>st<\/sup> March 2028, of the successful CAMS2_35 project (September 2021 to February 2025) which was also co-led by HYGEOS.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column_inner fusion-builder-nested-column-3 fusion_builder_column_inner_1_2 1_2 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-content-alignment:justify;\"><p>In this project, <strong>HYGEOS is in charge of the developments aiming at improving and extending all aspects of tropospheric and stratospheric aerosol modelling<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>implement operaionally developments from the <a href=\"https:\/\/camaera-project.eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CAMAERA<\/a> project, such as a new dust emission scheme, dynamic ammonia emissions, fungal spores, etc,<\/li>\n<li>develop and test a version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecmwf.int\/en\/forecasts\/documentation-and-support\/changes-ecmwf-model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IFS<\/a>-COMPO to simulate the impact of a large volcanic eruption that could be used in an operational context,<\/li>\n<li>improve the coverage of the evaluation, especially for PM, and propose solutions for known issues such as the too simulated diurnal cycle,<\/li>\n<li>take over the CAMS ultra-violet processor and propose improvements,<\/li>\n<li>improve simulated deposition fluxes and propose further possible deposition products, such as iron deposition or others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column_inner fusion-builder-nested-column-4 fusion_builder_column_inner_1_2 1_2 It aims at providing strong improvements of the aerosol modelling capabilities of the regional and global CAMS systems, on the assimilation of new sources of data, and on a better representation of secondary aerosols and their precursor gases. In addition to the project coordination, HYGEOS contributes to the development of <strong>new desert dust and sea-salt aerosol emission <\/strong>schemes using machine learning approaches and to the intercomparison and evaluation of dry deposition models. HYGEOS also works on the <strong>Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds<\/strong> (BVOC), precursor of the Second Organic Aerosols (SOA). To achieve this purpose, CAMAERA develops new prototype service elements of CAMS, beyond the current state-of-the-art, and complements research topics addressed in CAMEO project.<\/p>\n<p>HYGEOS participates also in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cameo-project.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CAMS EvOlution (<strong>CAMEO<\/strong>) project<\/a>, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecmwf.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ECMWF<\/a>, which contributes to the medium- to long-term evolution of the CAMS production systems and products. CAMEO tackles some challenges for enhancing the quality and service efficiency. These challenges are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a more accurate representation of the emissions and surface fluxes from anthropogenic and natural sources, vegetation and vegetation fires,<\/li>\n<li>an improved impact of assimilated satellite and in-situ observations on CAMS products<\/li>\n<li>the readiness to fully exploit the potential of earth observations from upcoming European satellite missions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>HYGEOS&#8217;s contribution focuses on deposition and on the quantification of the uncertainties of global products through an ensemble approach. First, it consists in better understand user requirements for deposition by different applications such as impact on solar collectors or agriculture. In second, HYGEOS develops <strong>user-specific validation protocol for deposition<\/strong>, defines priorities for validation and creates a database of validation data for deposition of dust, nitrogen and sulphur components with focus on non-European networks and initiatives. Then, HYGEOS performs demonstration study for a future <strong>regular validation of a global CAMS deposition product<\/strong> as potential addition to future CAMS operations. Finally, HYGEOS <strong>quantifies the uncertainty in global forecasts and studies the propagation of the uncertainty in meteorological parameters<\/strong> on the basis of an ensemble modelling. For that, the ensemble is extended with supplementary simulations that include emissions uncertainties and the use of different chemistry\/aerosol dry and wet deposition schemes.
