style=\"--awb-content-alignment:justify;\"><p>Water quality is a <strong>worldwide issue<\/strong> affecting human health, ecosystems\u2019 integrity, food production, industry, and recreation. Satellites offer a <strong>cost-effective solution<\/strong> to monitor water quality at a global scale through the measurement of spectral water reflectance, commonly referred to as water colour. <strong>Atmospheric correction is a critical step for retrieving water colour from space-borne images<\/strong>. Through the <a href=\"https:\/\/hygeos.com\/en\/polymer\/\"><strong>Polymer<\/strong><\/a><strong> atmospheric correction algorithm<\/strong>, HYGEOS has acquired recognized expertise in water colour retrieval for monitoring the biological activity of the oceans, coastal and inland waters.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-builder-row-inner fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"width:102% !important;max-width:102% !important;margin-left: calc(-2% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-2% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column_inner fusion-builder-nested-column-3 fusion_builder_column_inner_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-overflow:hidden;--awb-bg-color:var(--awb-custom_color_1);--awb-bg-color-hover:var(--awb-custom_color_1);--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-border-radius:15px 15px 15px 15px;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:0.98%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:0.98%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:0.98%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:0.98%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:0.98%;--awb-spacing-left-small:0.98%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;\"><p><strong>HYGEOS contributes to European operational water quality products<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\" style=\"--awb-content-alignment:justify;\"><p>Since an independent intercomparison exercise, performed in the ESA <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.esa.int\/en\/projects\/ocean-colour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative project<\/a> (OC-CCI), has confirmed that Polymer was the most efficient algorithm to retrieve accurate marine reflectances, it has been implemented in the OC-CCI operational chain to process data from SeaStar\/SeaWiFs, Aqua\/MODIS, Envisat\/MERIS, Suomi\/VIIRS and Sentinel-3\/OLCI sensors in order to generate timeseries of remote sensing reflectances at sea surface, from 1997 to the present. HYGEOS continues its long-standing involvement in the OC-CCI+ contributing to Phase 2.<\/p>\n<p>The OC-CCI processing chain is now operated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cds.climate.copernicus.eu\/cdsapp#!\/dataset\/satellite-ocean-colour?tab=overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Copernicus Climate Change Service<\/strong><\/a><strong> (C3S<\/strong>) and in the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.marine.copernicus.eu\/products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Copernicus Marine Service<\/strong><\/a><strong> (CMS)<\/strong> to provide global daily and monthly estimates of ocean surface chlorophyll-a concentration. As the most prevalent photosynthetic green pigment in marine photosynthetic organisms, <strong>chlorophyll-a is an indicator of the phytoplankton abundance<\/strong>, and therefore the base of the marine food web. This correction, as well as a totally revised Clear Water Atmospheric Correction algorithm with new aerosol modelling, detection and new capabilities regarding aerosol layer height retrieval, is now included in the robust and versatile Ocean Colour Standard Atmospheric Correction module (OC-SAC) which is being integrated into the <strong>OLCI operational processor of EUMETSAT<\/strong> in order to deliver the Collection 4 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eumetsat.int\/ocean-colour-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus Ocean Colour products<\/a>. Always looking for improvement, HYGEOS has developed, using Polymer as a baseline, an alternative atmospheric correction scheme (SACSO), using a <strong>spectral matching approach<\/strong> and including <strong>an uncertainty propagation scheme<\/strong>, to improve the quality of the OLCI water reflectance, in particular in presence of absorbing aerosols. Polymer, as well as the alternative SACSO processor, are both integrated into a modular Ocean Colour prototype processor deployment and validation framework. HYGEOS is also developing a daily Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) product from Sentinel-3\/OLCI sensor which would extend the list of operational Level 2 Ocean Color products distributed by EUMETSAT.<\/p>\n<p>HYGEOS also works on the <strong>ocean colour products derived from geostationary satellites<\/strong> operated by EUMETSAT. HYGEOS contributes to develop prototype processing for retrieval of ocean colour products, such as water turbidity and chlorophyll concentrations, from SEVIRI on MSG and the upcoming FCI on MTG for open ocean, coastal and inland water coverage. With its 10-minute temporal resolution, ABI allows to extend the satellite coverage to the whole day. HYGEOS algorithm is now integrated into <a href=\"https:\/\/datastore.groupcls.com\/products\/samtool-sargassum-detection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAMTool<\/a>, the operational Sargassum detection system operated by CLS, in complement of ocean colour products derived from the combination of 6 polar orbiting satellites.
