style=\"--awb-content-alignment:justify;\"><p>Land surfaces cover about 30% of the Earth and house a continuously growing global population. This creates an ever-increasing pressure on our environment. In such context, a continuous knowledge of the state and health of land ecosystems is required to support efficient decision-making.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;\"><strong>HYGEOS contributes to the European land monitoring initiatives<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\" style=\"--awb-content-alignment:justify;\"><p>Thanks to its expertise in radiative transfer, HYGEOS can define accurate methodologies to remove the effects of atmospheric components on the response of land surfaces to solar illumination. This is <strong>an essential step prior to the retrieval of the biophysical properties of vegetation and soils from Earth Observation images<\/strong>. For that, HYGEOS uses the robust and generic <a href=\"https:\/\/hygeos.com\/en\/smac\/\"><strong>SMAC-CL code<\/strong><\/a>, suitable for systematic processing of multi-sensor long time series at global scale.<\/p>\n<p>For that reason, SMAC_CL is implemented in the operational processing chains of the <a href=\"https:\/\/land.copernicus.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus Land Monitoring Service<\/a> and of the <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus Climate Change Service<\/a> to get top-of-canopy (TOC) reflectances. Thus, it started in mid-2000\u2019s with HYGEOS participation in the precursor projects FP6\/geoland and FP7\/geoland2. Then, it has continued in the 2010\u2019s with the coordination of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fp7-imagines.eu\/\">FP7\/ImagineS<\/a> project.
